Telling Our Twisted Histories

Podcast series - English production

Our great, collective history has been twisted by centuries of colonization. The history textbooks were written and taught from the perspective of the colonizers. Over time, this twisting of the facts skewed our perspective and this has impacted Indigenous Peoples lives in every way imaginable.

In the Innu Aimun language the word Mamu means together, so join us as Kanien'kehá:ka host, Kaniehtiio Horn guides us through conversations with over 70 Indigenous People from eleven different Indigenous groups, the Abenaki, Anishnabe, Attikamekw, Cree, Innu, Maliseet / Wolastoqiyik Nations , Mig'mak, Mohawk, Naskapi and Wendate, whose lands now make up Quebec, New Brunswick, and Labrador, as they share their words, humour, and truths. Together we will decolonize our histories and ourselves one word at a time.

In each episode, they decolonize with emotion, humor and truth, a WORD that needs to be reviewed and taken down. These 11 words which correspond to an episode are: Discovery I Wild I Pocahontas I God I Obey I Reserve I School I Last name I Indian Time I Banana I Reconciliation.

We want to reach out, but we don’t ask for permission; we get the speaking stick back.
